There would be no Birkin without Jane

1

Jane Birkin, an actress, a model, a singer, a muse, an icon of the 60s and 70s. There is so much to talk about when it comes to Jane Birkin but today I'm inspired by 2 of her very fashionable bags: the straw basket that she used to bring along with her on shopping sprees, at the beach and fun nights out (4 decades ago), and obviously everyone's beloved Birkin bag.

How cool would it be to have Hermès name a bag after you?!
This is how the story went: One day, Jane was sitting in a plane next to Hermès chief executive Jean-Louis Dumas on a flight from Paris to London where Birkin explained to Dumas that it had been difficult to find a leather weekend bag she liked. In 1984, he created a black supple leather bag for her and the Birkin bag was born.

That's what I call an icon :)

  1. I love this post! Jane Birkin is a legend. There was so much talk about that itsy bitsy transparent dress she wore when she went out with Serge Gainsbourg! She is still so cute, love her. And her daughters are equally stylish but when your mother is Jane Birkin, how can you not be?? Lou Doillon is the coolest x

  30. Is it fashion suicide to admit that I never actually knew how she had that strong a link to the Hermes Birkin bag? That is amazing. It really is - style icon or what? I LOVE all the pics of her with her infamous straw bag too, now that is something I did know, only because my mum growing up used to carry one everywhere and say she was Jane Birkin! haha

  35. The straw bag is the French touch... :) In her book La Parisienne, Ines de la Fressange always talks about the decalé style and she advises us wearing a straw bag with a more polished look to give it a spontaneity touch :)
